Plants from Africa
Eco-System: Rain Forest
You may be able to find some of these plants in your local nursery. Some of the more exotic plants may be difficult to find.
- Anubias (Anubias) - You can find Anubias occasionally as aquarium plants.
- Asparagus fern (Asparagus falcatus) - Ground plant; do not leave this plant around or in standing
water.
- Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus) - This is a hanging version of the Asparagus fern. You
must provide adequate drainage for this plant to survive.
- Chlorophytum (Chlorophytum comosum) - This plant can be both a ground and hanging plant. Warm
conditions can have detrimental effects to this plant.
- Dracena (Dracaena deremensis) - This is a ground plant, and grows very quickly. You
must prune the plant or it will take over the enclosure.
The cut off pieces develop roots rather quickly, so the
cuttings can be used again.
- Dracena (Dracaena sanderiana, Dracena godseffiana ) - This is also a ground plant, but not nearly as hardy as Dracaena deremensis. These plants are only
suitable for small, quiet lizards.
- Stephanotis (Stephanotis floribunda) - Ground growing plant. Like vines, this plant will grow
around and up the branches in the aquarium. Stephanotis
also blooms.
Eco-System: Desert
Many of the desert plants should be readily available from your local nursery, as these desert plants are commonly used as household plants.
- Aloe (Aloe arborescens) - Use this variety of Aloe in large enclosures only, as
it will grow very large.
- Aloe (Aloe variegata) - Much smaller than Aloe arborescens, use for
small lizards.
- Bowstring Hemp (Sansevieria trifasciata) - Sizes can vary for this plant, also needs to be watered
often.
- Gasteria (Gasteria) - Very easy to maintain; this plant may be a little harder
to find.
- Haworthia (Haworthia) - Suitable for small lizards; this plant may be a little
harder to find.
- Jade plants (Crassula falcata, Crassula portulacea) - These plants need to be changed often and new branches
develop very quickly.
