Originating from Madagascar,
the Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko (Uroplatus
phantasticus) is a fairly small gecko, growing
to sizes ranging from 3 inches to 6 inches. They have
no dominant coloration, and will be commonly seen in
shades of orange, brown, yellow and even purple. This
species of gecko is also referred to
as the Eyelash Leaf-Tailed Gecko.
The Uroplatus family of geckos are referred to as 'Leaf-Tailed
Geckos,' with their tails flattened and resembling a
leaf. The Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko
is no exception, with many of them sporting notches
along the fringe of their tails, further resembling
a leaf. As mentioned, they are also called Eyelash Leaf-Tailed
Geckos due to the eyelash-like fringe above each of
their eyes.
These oddly shaped bodies provide the Satanic
Leaf-Tailed Gecko with added camouflage from
predators, and for blending into their surroundings
when hunting. They are not very skittish or aggressive,
except when two males are in close quarters.
If you are keeping one of these geckos in captivity,
read our Satanic
Leaf-Tailed Gecko Care Sheet for their
care requirements. |
