The Scheltopusik (Ophisaurus apodus)
is a legless glass lizard native to southern Europe
and Asia. It is also known as the European Legless Lizard.
Scheltopusiks live in open, dry plains with medium
length grasses or lightly wooded areas. It prefers a
dry climate, but does come out to hunt for wood when
it rains. These lizards eat small mammals, spiders,
centipedes and crustaceans.
The Scheltopusik will grow to about 130 cm long
when fully grown. They are always a tan to light grey
color with a lighter shade on their heads. They do actually
have 2 very small rear legs, but these are only about
2 mm long.
