Food
& Water
Like most carnivourous lizards, the diet of the Western
Collared Lizard should contain a wide variety
of insects. Provide a mixture of crickets, mealworms,
silkworms, waxworms, etc. In the wild, Western
Collared Lizards also eat small lizards and snakes.
Make sure all insects are gut-loaded with healthy food,
and dusted with a calcium or multi-vitamin supplement.
Place a small dish in the enclosure for water.
Lighting,
Temperature & Humidity
Keep the lights on a 12 hour day cycle, using full-spectrum
(UVB) flourescent lighting. An incandescent bulb, ceramic
heat emitter or/and a heat pad needs to be used to provide
a daytime heat gradient ranging from 75 degrees F to
88 degrees F. Drop the temperature down to around 73
degrees F at night. Western Collared Lizards
only require a low level of humidity.
Housing
A 3' x 1.5' x 1.5' minimum should be adhered to for
the size of the enclosure. Remember, bigger is better.
Use playsand or light gravel for the substrate. These
lizards are used to living on sand or a lightly packed
ground. They also need a lot of cover for hiding. |
